What Class Will You Insta-Level?

Last week the World of Warcraft team released a blog post updating everyone on the status of Warlords of Draenor, and it included this little tidbit:

In addition, when you pre-purchase either digital version [of Warlords of Draenor], we’re going to grant you your level-90 boost at the time of pre-purchase. That’s a little different from the plan we laid out at BlizzCon, but based on the feedback, it’s obvious that many of you would like the chance to get acquainted with a new class before heading into the expansion.

This statement, along with a survey that asked users how much they would be willing to pay for an instant level 90, has caused a lot of consternation in the MMO community. I understand why people might not like the idea, but for myself I’m more bothered by the incorrect comma use in that quotation than its content. (Look, grammar is the true serious business.)

I can’t find a source for this number at the moment, but I’m fairly certain that there are more North Americans who used to play WoW than those who currently play. And I suspect that luring back ex-players is easier and more cost effective than trying to snag new ones.

Level 90 is a huge barrier for returning folks! Even if you wandered off after Wrath, that’s 10 levels before you can join your friends in end-game activities, or more if you want to try a different class. Ideally WoW would create some kind of mentoring or sidekicking system, but barring that I think a paid insta-90 option (along with the free on you get with purchase) is fine.

Yes, it means people will be level 90 without having played their class for the paltry 15 or so hours it takes experienced players to level nowadays, but if you’ve done any LFRs or BGs lately you’ll know that there’s probably not much difference between that and half your group anyway.

But worrying about instant levelling is really beside the point. The important issue here, I think, is what class am I going to level up with the free 90?!

I currently have a 90 priest and an 85 shaman on the Horde side, as well as an 80 Alliance mage. It seems to me my top 3 options are:

Warlock: It is undeniable that warlocks are rad as hell. They’ve always gotten the best looking tier sets, they have cool demon pets, and neat utility spells. I’m not sure where they are right now in the DPS hierarchy, but in the past they’ve been very competitive damage dealers and occasionally even good tanks. While I don’t think levelling up a warlock would be that difficult, they are cool enough (and I am lazy enough) to be an excellent insta-90 candidate.

Rogue: I basically play healers at almost every opportunity, so the appeal of rogues is that they seem to fill the exact opposite role. Rogues are traditionally light on buffs or support mechanisms, and instead have the sole mission of stabbing things as hard and as fast as possible. On the one hand I’m a little iffy on playing melee, but on the other what better opportunity to Learn2Fight than an instant max-level character?

tier 2 paladin What Class Will You Insta Level?

Paladin T2: Still the best armor set Blizzard ever made.

Paladin: As an eternal priest player, I have always been secretly a little jealous of paladins. Not only can they be competent tanks or melee DPS, but as healers they seemed to have such a delightful bag of tricks. Their plate armor makes them probably the best choice for PvP healing, and the old Divine Intervention was not only a great cooldown but also a lot of fun for playing tricks on people. (Semajftw, we miss you!)

However, what I have learned about paladins first hand is that they are sooooo boring to level. So much. The boringest. Right now paladin is my #1 choice for instant levelling, and hopefully in Warlords of Draenor I can become the PvP menace I have always wanted to be.

So what class will you use for your free insta-90?

  1. Man. I am torn. I’m not even subscribed right now and I’m already thinking “hm, what do I want to boost to 90?”. I’m thinking it’d be a brand-new character, but I have all healers (save a monk) at 85 (at least). But I don’t want to roll a monk. Then, there’s the issue that I dislike playing as a melee DPS so I’m considering a warlock, although I’ve never really felt a strong connection to the class. (I may have been traumatized by them during Arena Season 2…)

I already have a mage (85), a hunter, a shaman (both 90), a druid (85)… It seems a waste to boost a class that’s over level 80, which is what my warrior is at.

So I’m thinking maybe I’ll start a DK, make it an engineer/blacksmith (my only two missing professions) and spec blood. (While I prefer to heal or do ranged DPS, at least I could tank.)

Ugh. I don’t know. CHOICES! DECISIONS! And I’m not even playing right now, ahahaha! :)

For yourself, I humbly recommend the paladin, just because they used to be horrible to level. (They’re not anymore, but MAN, did it used to suck. I would have taken an instant 60 in a hot second back in Vanilla.)

  2. Druid on a new server, already created, just waiting for the boost to show up… to this point whenever I create a toon on a new server I make it dual gather to get a bit of gold rolling so being able to herb while mounted is a bonus, hence the druid choice… and I’m hoping that flight form is still free, not sure if they’re including any gold or mount skills with the boosted 90.

If I actually intended to PLAY (besides professions) the boosted toon, though, all monk, all the time. Can’t have enough monks. Or maybe a mage, portals are handy. Or warlock, summons are handy too. Hm. Wonder how much those extra boosts will cost.

    • Druids are a great choice because they can play so many roles at level cap. It’s like having 3 or 4 alts in one! (Monks are the same way.)

  3. Heh, I have pretty much this same post queued up for this week. And you know what, I am going to run with it anyway!

It is a very important question, so I’ll link you to expand the discussion.

    • Definitely do run with it! I look forward to reading about the classes you think are good insta-90 candidates. :)

  4. I’ve been agonizing over this. Agonizing. And now your post is making me agonize moooore. I don’t know. This is so hard! I play Priest, too. I haven’t loved another class like I love Priest and I’m leveling up a Monk right now but that goes so fast I don’t want to waste the instant 90 on it. I was thinking Warlock. I definitely agree on the transmog choices there. And I’m tickled by the idea of having a pet.

    • I had the exact same line of thought with monk. I’m levelling one right now and with heirlooms, guild perks, and the daily monk XP quest I’m burning through levels so quickly that it seems a shame to blow my free 90 on the class.

  5. I don’t know if it really created THAT much consternation in the MMO community, besides all the negative people on the MMO-Champion forums, but they’re constantly complaining anyhow.

But for my class, I already have a 90 Mage (Frost), Shaman (Enh/Resto), and Paladin (Holy/Ret). I’m considering Warrior. I don’t really have a tank, and I like the idea of a warrior, but I always get stuck around level 30 and say screw it, I don’t want to level anymore.

Definitely not a Hunter or Warlock. Despite playing a Frost mage, I generally dislike pet classes. Priest I have one at 63, but it’s sooo boring. Druid I have a Horde one at 85 already. Death Knights just don’t do it for me, and I’m currently leveling a Monk. Rogue, bleh. So yeah, Warrior.

  6. Ill most likely do my tank .. ive always enjoyed him and loved raiding him. Since discovering the whole 90 boost, I’ve got the itch to play and have found that a few of my fellow guild members are still going and our old guild DownundeR on Draenor realm is still active as such.
I love my hunter but .. she wont take so long to boost 20 level.

“Paladin T2: Still the best armor set Blizzard ever made.”
    Contradiction!

Also, T2 is a bit overdone. T10 with Obsidian Edged Blade is pretty rad. I am not biased by the fact that that is my own transmog.

“However, what I have learned about paladins first hand is that they are sooooo boring to level. So much. The boringest.”
Oh come on, we’ve come a long way since Judgement-and-Wait. How boring can things be when you get to start tanking or healing at level 15 and never have to kill another rat? Nothing is more exciting that *ahem* herding cats through leveling instances.

  8. If I had to pick today – probably druid – it’s versatile and I don’t have one remotely close to the level cap.
