Ostensibly Liore sat down with Arolaide and Ellyndrial to talk about their beta experiences in Titanfall and The Elder Scrolls Online but what actually happened was… a long battle over the definition of “player generated content”.

Apparently sandbox MMOs are the way of the future because we players tear through studio-generated content too quickly, but what counts as player generated content? Is it building a house like EQN Landmark? Is PvP player generated content, and if so is that why games like Counterstrike are fun even years later?

We’re not sure, but we have differing opinions and we’re going to shout about it!

    I do like voice work to a certain extent, it’s a way of promoting engagement with certain characters but I don’t think every single piece needs to be voiced.

    Funnily for Tor I believe the actually said this wasn’t the largest cost, and there were a few above it. The largest cost was apparently tinkering and getting the unfinished hero engine working properly for them and placing into it what they needed.

    The major issue I think with voice work is not the cost but that it extends the time it takes to release new content. It’s a lengthy affair and that’s not even counting if you have to wait for special voice actors.

  2. That was a fun discussion! I’m inclined to agree with Elly about the player-generated content, though I think there is a bit of a grey area when it comes to dev-created content that doesn’t work as intended without a minimum amount of players participating, which is where I would put things like battlegrounds and the auction house.

    I think for my personal definition of player-created content, it would require the actual source of entertainment to be somewhat removed from the tools originally provided by the game. So just building a house in a house-building game is not “participating in player-generated content”, but actually doing things with it (like roleplay in it, fight over it etc.) would be.

  3. Interesting debate. I think it might be helpful to use a different term, maybe “User-Driven Gameplay”, to describe things like PVP arenas or an in-game auction house, as they’re activities that are highly variable and unpredictable (due to player input), but still operate within a specific set of predetermined parameters.

    Now, if a player came along and started a “warriors only” arena battle (for instance), that, in my mind, begins to look more like User-Created Content.
